New test to secure animal health, welfare and food safety - 02.11.2011

Animal health, animal welfare and food safety can be improved by the use of a new rapid test developed in Q-PorkChains.

Researchers in Q-PorkChains have developed and validated a rapid test, which can help determine positive plasma proteins (APPs) in animals. APPs are plasma proteins that modify their concentration following infection, inflammation, trauma or stress. The circulating concentrations of these proteins can therefore provide an objective measure of the health status of an animal and are increasingly being used as biomarkers for animal health and welfare in farm animals such as pigs or cattle.

The rapid test developed in Q-PorkChains is based on the detection of elevated levels of pig Major Acute-phase protein (pig-MAP).
