Final Conference: "Sustainable and Diversified Pork Chains: From Science to Practice"

A 2-day public stakeholder conference took place in October 2011, to present and highlight the newest knowledge within pig and pork production and to mark the official closing of a long and fruitful project (Q-PorkChains). 

The stakeholder conference entitled "Sustainable and Diversified Pork Chains: From Science to Practice" was open to the public and addressed issues especially of interest to stakeholders within pig and pork production.

 

The conference took place on 27-28 October 2011 and was held at University of Illes Balears, Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca.

 

The stakeholder conference targeted both industry and higher education and included subjects such as: Diversity of consumer and society demands, Diversity of production chains, Quality management, and Sustainability. On the second conference day the programme focused on demonstrating the implementation of Q-PorkChains results into practice and included parallel sessions on: Product innovation, Biomarkers, Tools for managing and enhancing quality and Economical sustainability. 

 

The conference ended with a technical tour to experience the Majorcan Black Pig Production.

Q-PorkChains in short

Q-PorkChains includes 62 partners, from 20 different countries including Europe, Brazil, China, South Africa and USA. The total budget is 20.7 million €. The EU grant is 14.5 million €. Q-PorkChains is an integrated project under the EU's sixth framework programme. The full title of the project is "Improving quality of pork and pork products for the consumer: Development of innovative, integrated, and sustainable food production chains of high quality pork products matching consumer demands".

 

Scientific Key ActivitiesQ-PorkChains comprises 6 research modules; consumers, citizens and the market, pork production, product development, pork chain management, molecular quality control and knowledge synthesis. In addition two horizontal modules aims at testing and implementing innovative concepts originating from Q-PorkChains and disseminating research results to stakeholders at all levels.
