Christmas tree shortage expected amid global supply shortage

(CNN) – For Americans this holiday season, whether or not they tick off an essential item on their Christmas list depends on the global shortage of supplies.

Artificial Christmas trees are the latest fallout from the current global supply chain crisis that is causing a massive backlog of shipments.

James Li, the National Tree Company’s supplier in China, says his factory has a backlog of around 150 containers of Christmas trees worth around $ 3 million waiting to be shipped.

Li said many ships have come to the United States but have not returned from ports. For this reason, the goods cannot be shipped.

The company rented storage space to store the trees that would normally already be in the United States.

Li warns that if the shipping backlog persists, many people may not be able to purchase Christmas trees this year.

Many of these Chinese-made Christmas trees can be found at National Tree Company, a New Jersey-based company that sells to retailers like Target and Amazon.

The shortage is blocking California ports where many storage container ships are located off Los Angeles.

National Tree Company CEO Chris Butler said every day is a struggle to get container ships.

“We’re fighting against the toy makers, the electronics makers, other manufacturers to get the containers, and we have to pay a lot more for those containers,” Butler said.

Butler said his company is paying 10 times more this year to bring its products across the ocean compared to last year.

“Because of this, we have to pass some of these price increases on to the consumer,” he said.

As a result, a 20-25% increase in the price of artificial trees is expected this year if you’re lucky enough to find one more by Thanksgiving.
