The global shortage of chipsets and electronic parts, including lithium-ion cells, has started to impact the delivery schedules of Ola Electric’s first S1 and S1 Pro scooters.

In an email to its pending customers, the company said on Saturday it was extending the delivery window for the first batch of customers from 3 to 5 weeks. As a result, customers who have received their scooters on or before November 25 may now have to wait until the end of this year before getting their hands on the scooter. In addition, the second buying window that was supposed to open on December 17 has also been postponed to the end of January. This means an extended wait for customers who have booked the scooter by paying Rs 499 but have not yet completed the Rs 20,000 order form, which is the next step before they become eligible to make the final payment. .

“We apologize for the delay and assure you that we are increasing production as quickly as possible so that you can get your Ola S1 as soon as possible,” the email read.

The global auto industry has been facing a shortage of chipsets for over a year now. He has seen the waiting period for some cars in India extend to 11-12 months. While it hasn’t had much of an impact on the traditional two-wheeler industry, they don’t use as many chips as electric scooters. What has made the situation worse in Ola even more is a growing shortage of lithium-ion cells – a key part of any lithium-ion battery that powers electric vehicles, which is currently fully imported from countries like Taiwan, Korea, etc. South and China. Ola imports its cells from Korea.

This isn’t the first time that Ola has had to push back her booking and delivery times. In accordance with its initial plan, deliveries of its scooters as well as road tests were to begin from October 25. That schedule was pushed back a fortnight to November 10 when the company began offering test drives to its waitlisted customers in four cities. At the same time, it has also started to accept payment of the balance from them, which is the last step before deliveries can be made to customers at their doorstep. To date, Ola has not delivered any scooter to its customers.

It has, however, announced its intention to deploy trials in many other cities across the country in the coming weeks. By the middle of next month, it plans to offer test rides in more than 1,000 cities and towns across the country.

Ola launched test tours in Bangalore, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Kolkata on November 10, then opened 5 more cities – Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi, Mumbai and Pune on Friday.

Next weekend it will start testing in Surat, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Coimbatore, Vadodara, Bhubaneswar, Tiruppur, Jaipur and Nagpur.

The 3-5 week delivery delay will also impact customers who have been promised deliveries in December, January and February.
