How to tell if Tyler’s school supply list will cause back pain

The last thing a 7-year-old needs is to lug around a 20-pound backpack all day, and doctors warn that a school backpack can lead to lifelong problems if it’s too heavy. Will Tyler’s school supply lists cause problems?

My daughter came home after the first day of school and said her obliques hurt. What?! It had to be the most unexpected and weirdest thing I ever heard after asking this switchboard “How was your day”, but I guess it’s better than “Alright”. At least there was information attached. His obliques are going to be solid after a year of carrying a heavy backpack to school, and honestly, it makes me want to load one up and carry it around all day to work. It is a good basic exercise.

It can be dangerous for children if their backpack is too heavy, and there is a rule parents can follow to draw a line and help us know when too many binders and pens have been piled in. A child’s backpack should weigh no more than ten percent of a child’s body weight, according to Health Line. So if your fifth grader weighs 100 pounds, the backpack shouldn’t weigh more than 10 pounds. It might seem a little weird to put kids and backpacks on the scale before they go out, but I totally do it. They will thank us later.

I have checked Tyler School Supply Lists, and it could be a near call. This is an overview of the List of Tyler high schools, for example:

Science
1- Composition book
1 pack Markers
glue bottles / glue sticks
1- Scissors
2-pkg. pencils
1- pack of colored pencils
300 packets of notes
2- Highlighters
1- pack of red pens
2-pkg. loose-leaf notebook paper
1- Binding with dividers

It’s just a class! And other Tyler High classes have similar supply lists. Hopefully most of the supplies can be dropped off in classrooms instead of being dragged around all day.

My schoolgirl has to keep everything in her backpack because they are not doing lockers this year. If kids have to pack sports clothes, shoes, lunch, snacks, and a phone, it can add weight quickly. The concern is that children will develop back pain over time if the backpack is too heavy.

What about us? If you are an active adult and outdoor enthusiast who enjoys hiking, this type of backpack may be a bit heavier, depending on Health Line. Adults can wear backpacks up to 20 percent of their body weight without any ill effects.

It will be a great year, and it will be even better if the backpack is light. Crisps and muffins don’t weigh that much, do they? There will always be room for snacks.
